February 19th - Program Highlights
George Needham introduced Don Chenoweth, Rotary member and Safe Harbor Peer Support Assistant Director. Safe Harbor operates two recovery centers where adults with mental illness can get support from their peers. The two locations are; Annie’s Outreach, in Delaware, and No Limits Outreach, in Edison. The adults at the centers usually cannot work but still want to contribute to their community. They may work part time, or volunteer. The centers served 1,000 residents of Delaware and Morrow Counties in their last year of service.

The consumers who attend the centers often need transportation to and from the site, so that is provided. Steve Hedge, a Rotary member and the former director of the Delaware Morrow Mental Health Board, matched all donations made during a recent fundraiser to replace the Safe Harbor Van and with that support, a new van was purchased.

The centers provide many services for these adults, including but not limited to; budgeting and nutrition classes, transportation, art therapy, wellness screenings, genealogy and cooking classes. No Limits also provides a food pantry and Christmas giveaways for the local
community in Edison. Annie’s Outreach makes and sells soaps. The peers hold 8 out of the 10 board positions and comprise most of the staff.

Don reviewed the research on mental illness and violence risk, indicating that most the majority of mentally ill are victimized in the crimes that they may be involved in. Don indicated that the consumers only ask that their humanity be acknowledged and ask asked that Rotary members spread the word.
